General Appearance<\/td>General Appearance: Strong, active and intelligent in expression. A well-balanced dog with an appearance of elegance. The distinctive feature of the breed is its close, crisp coat of curls.<\/td><\/tr>
CoatColour<\/td>Coat: The distinctive feature of the breed is a coat of small, tight, crisp curls lying close to the skin. The curls cover the entire body from the occiput to the tip of the tail. On the head, face, front of the forelegs and feet, the coat is short and smooth. The coat should never be silky or woolly, nor should it form feathering. The dense, curly coat provides protection when working in harsh weather and in water. Undercoat is sparse.Colour: Black or liver.<\/td><\/tr>
Gait<\/td>Lively, free and effortless, with good reach and drive. Legs move in parallel.<\/td><\/tr>

Faults<\/td>Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault, the seriousness of which should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on its ability to perform its traditional work.<\/td><\/tr>
Disqualifying Faults<\/td>Aggressive or overly shy dogs. Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/td><\/tr>

A Brief History<\/h2>\n\n

The Curly Coated Retriever originated in England and is one of the oldest retriever breeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their exact origins are not fully known. This is because dogs at the time were bred primarily for a specific purpose, in this case retrieving game. The development of the breed involved several now-extinct breeds, including the Large Rough Water Dog, the Tweed Water Spaniel and the Lesser Newfoundland, as well as breeds that still exist today, such as the Irish Water Spaniel and continental water dogs including the Wetterhoun, Barbet and Poodle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first written references to the breed date back to 1803, and the breed standard was officially recognised in 1913. At that time, the Curly Coated Retriever was a highly popular and widely used gundog for retrieving game from both land and water, and could be found on many large estates. However, the World Wars and the subsequent rise in the popularity of the Labrador Retriever led to a significant decline in the breed’s popularity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Curly Coated Retriever is valued for its intelligence, steady temperament, independence, natural willingness to work, courage and remarkable perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> At the same time, the Curly Coated Retriever is a wonderful family companion\u2014devoted, caring, attentive and friendly towards its family and friends, with no tendency towards aggressive behaviour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
