How to Qualify Your Dog for Breeding

Breeding Requirements

To obtain breeding approval, a dog or bitch must fulfil the breeding requirements. These requirements are breed-specific and can be found on the relevant breed pages.

💻 Electronically (recommended)

The owner shall send the relevant Breed Advisor for the breed a legible set of documents by email:

  • completed Application for Breeding Approval (there is no need to print or sign the form – entering your name electronically is sufficient)
  • confirmation of payment of the breeding approval fee
  • a copy of the membership card for the current year or confirmation of payment of the membership fee
  • a copy (scan) of the pedigree (both sides), including any supplementary pages
  • health test results:
    • hip and elbow dysplasia results (HD and ED), including the evaluation forms completed by the assessing veterinary surgeons and the Retriever Klub CZ certificate
    • genetic test results
    • OCD examination results
    • any other health examination results, where applicable
  • show critique(s) (the dog must be over 12 months of age; the bite, dentition and height must be recorded either in the pedigree or in the show critique)
  • working test results:
    • OVVR or other retrieving tests
    • in particular: PZ, LZ, VP and VZ
    • CACT field trials organised by Retriever Klub CZ or KCHLS
  • the record sheet from the Spring Dog Survey (if the dog was measured and assessed after 12 months of age)
  • photographs of the dog:
    • standing profile
    • portrait
  • 👉 Please send the documents as:
    • legible scans, or
    • high-quality photographs in a reasonable file size.
📬 By Post (Traditional Method)

The owner shall:

  • send the following to the Breed Advisor by email:
    • the Application for Breeding Approval
    • photographs of the dog
  • send the following to the Breed Advisor by post:
    • the original pedigree
    • the originals of all supporting documents
    • the signed Application for Breeding Approval
  • additionally enclose:
    • the originals and copies of all other supporting documents

🔄 What Happens Next?

💻 Electronic Submission
  • The Breed Advisor will review the submitted documentation.
    • 👉 If the documentation is incomplete, illegible or missing:
      • The Breed Advisor will contact the owner
      • and agree on the next steps.
    • 👉 If everything is in order:
      • the Breed Advisor will verify the submitted scans against the original documents,
      • record the fulfilment of the breeding requirements in the pedigree,
      • and return the original documents to the owner at the address provided in the application.
  • 📌 Important: Any time required to complete or correct an incomplete application is not included in the processing time for granting breeding approval.
  • 📌 Processing time: within 14 days of receipt of the complete documentation (postal delivery time and any time required to supply missing documents are not included).
  • 📁 Record keeping: the original Application for Breeding Approval is retained in the Club’s records.
📬 Traditional Submission
  • The Breed Advisor will verify the submitted documents,
  • record the fulfilment of the breeding requirements in the pedigree,
  • and return the original documents to the owner.
  • 📌 Processing time: within 30 days of receipt of the documentation (postal delivery time and any time required to supply missing documents are not included).
  • 📁 Record keeping: the Application for Breeding Approval, copies of the supporting documentation and a copy of the pedigree are retained in the Club’s records.

⚠️ Important – Registration in the Stud Book

To complete the breeding approval process, the dog or bitch must also be registered in the ČMKJ Stud Book.

🐾 Breeding Qualification by Exception (Working Lines)

An exception to the current breeding requirements may be granted for retrievers from working lines, subject to approval by both clubs representing retriever breeds – Retriever Klub CZ (RK CZ) and KCHLS.

The following requirements must be met:

📋 Breeding Assessment
  • The breeding assessment:
    • is always organised jointly by RK CZ and KCHLS,
    • is carried out by an authorised conformation judge who is a member of RK CZ or KCHLS,
    • is open to dogs from 12 months of age.
  • The following are assessed:
    • height at the withers,
    • dentition and bite,
    • position of the eyelids,
    • testicles in male dogs.
🎯 Working Tests and Hunting Tests

To qualify for breeding by exception, both of the following requirements must be met:

  • 1) Working Test (WT)
    • a Working Test in class L with a minimum grade of Very Good,
    • organised by one of the clubs (RK CZ / KCHLS) or abroad,
    • the WT must include a water exercise in which the dog demonstrates its ability to swim.
      • 👉 If the WT does not include a water exercise:
      • the organiser must arrange for the dog’s swimming ability to be assessed by a judge,
      • if the venue does not allow for such an assessment, the WT cannot be accepted for breeding qualification purposes.
  • 2) Hunting Test / Field Trial
    • Any CACT hunting test conferring hunting eligibility and organised by RK CZ or KCHLS:
      • SZVP
      • PZ
      • VZPR
      • ZPR
      • SZR
      • completed with a minimum classification of Prize II,
    • or
    • a successfully completed Field Trial (FT) in the Czech Republic or abroad.
    • 👉 Requirements:
      • the test must include a water exercise in which the dog demonstrates its ability to swim,
      • the test must be successfully completed.
🧬 Health Tests

Health testing must comply with the current breeding requirements for retrievers set by Retriever Klub CZ.
